Some Incredible “Live Edge” Guanacaste Slabs Are Coming Your Way!!

Last season we came across a very large Guanacaste log in the Belize River.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The log was a real monster!

She was 18′ long and 4′ in diameter.

We couldn’t get her floated high enough to get through the shallows to a low lying bank and we didn’t have enough “umph” on the boom of the skidder to get her lifted over the high sided bank where she was located.

We ended up sawing this behemoth into 2 pieces to get it lifted out of the water.

All total, it took nearly 2 days to get “Big Mama”  to a point we could finally call for a flat bed…. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

….and get her loaded and on her way to the storage base.

Once we got her there we had a new challenge. What the heck were we going to do with it?? I wanted to slice live edge, (or “sinker” edge), slabs from it but there wasn’t a mill in Belize who had enough throat to slice a log of this size through and through.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Enter Mr. Hub……

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWell known in Belize for his amazing ability to mill logs into slabs using only a chainsaw, this spry 65 year old picked up a long barred chainsaw at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since.

When I went to the ops base to watch him work, I was a bit skeptical about his ability but my doubt was blown away like saw chips in a strong wind as I watched him perform feats of skill with a chainsaw that left heads shaking and jaws slacked.

When the day was done we had 15 well sawn planks that will make some incredible “Live Edge” table tops.
